Our hand therapists will make custom splints for you.

An orthosis is another name for a splint. Orthotics help align joints, muscles, tendons, and ligaments for optimum healing and function. Specific injuries, including fractures of the wrist or hand, require the fabrication of an orthosis that is custom-made just for you.

The use of our hands is vital to our everyday life. If you or a loved one has sustained a hand injury, you certainly know this to be true! Any damage to the wrist or hand carries the potential for severe limitations and loss of function. Proper identification and treatment of traumatic hand and wrist injuries are critical to preventing loss of function, nerve damage, joint restrictions, and persistent pain.

If you are dealing with a fracture in your wrist(s) or hand(s), our hand therapists are here to help you! Our dedicated hand therapists will conduct a physical evaluation to examine the function of your wrist, hand, and fingers and create a custom orthotic specifically for your needs based on your doctor’s diagnosis and order.

How our hand therapists can help you

At Rose City Physical Therapy & Hand Therapy Specialists in Portland, OR, our hand therapists will help you along your road to recovery. We will start with a thorough evaluation of your injuries and determine the most appropriate treatment for you. Together, we will set goals that are most important to you.

During your therapy sessions, you will work one-on-one with your therapist on pain reduction, swelling control, range of motion, strength, dexterity and coordination. Your therapist will also design a home exercise program for you to supplement your work in the clinic.

Various treatment interventions are used in hand therapy to help you comfortably perform daily functions. These may include any combination of therapeutic exercises,  dexterity and coordination, custom orthosis/splint design, pain management, manual therapy, taping, ergonomics, or edema management techniques.

There are also different exercise tools that a hand therapist may have you perform to strengthen your upper extremity after an injury, such as working with putty, using a gripper, or using dumbbells.
